Back story: Robert was born to the Governor of the island of Antillia and later joined the royal navy with his brother Klaus. Klaus would rise within the ranks, but Robert kept his rank, feeling that he could do more for the navy that way. One day while out at sea the ship he was on gets attacked by Captain Rodrigo de la Vega's (Captain Cutlass') ship. He was allowed to live, and with some convincing, became a part of the pirate captains crew and got the Nickname "Silver Roberts."

Fan fact: His name comes from the author of "Treasure Island, and his nickname is a reference to the character "Long John Silver" from the same book.
